Argentina: Buenos Aires Summer

Program Overview

Buenos Aires, Argentina, the second largest country in South America, is multifaceted in its variety of people, land and climate. Situated on a vast estuary known as the Rio de la Plata, Buenos Aires is the sprawling capital of Argentina. The population of greater Buenos Aires is estimated to be around 13 million. The city contains 46 barrios, each with a distinctive flavor: downtown is a bustling area of historic buildings, government offices, commerce, restaurants, shops, theaters and cinemas; San Telmo, with its antique shops, flea markets and tango bars; la Boca, an Italian neighborhood full of brightly painted houses and cantinas; Belgrano, the refined district of education. With its wide boulevards and outdoor cafes, cosmopolitan Buenos Aires is one of the great cities in the world.

The Universidad de Belgrano is located in one of the most distinguished residential areas of metropolitan Buenos Aires. Belgrano is only a few minutes from downtown where late-night life, good conversation over long, lingering dinners or at sidewalk cafes can be enjoyed in a safe city. The Universidad de Belgrano is a 40 year old private institution of proved reputation. Its solid tradition in higher education guarantees the quality of Spanish courses, which are taught by native teachers specially trained as second language instructors. Intensive practice in the classroom and the language lab, supported by abundant authentic materials as teaching aids, promises excellent results.

Activities and Opportunities

Student Life

Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires, capital city of Argentina, is a great metropolis with a population of almost thirteen million inhabitants, the eighth most populated urban center in the world. Cosmopolitan and self-styled, Buenos Aires has been the port of entry to a massive European immigration that has left a deep heritage in the local culture.

The rhythm of our exciting city is driven by an active and varied cultural life. The history of three Nobel Prize winners and the most brilliant cultural tradition in Latin America are intertwined with cafes, tango, and post-modern art.

Today Buenos Aires stands at the center of Mercosur. Based on Argentina's long-standing cultural and trade tradition, this majestic city serves as the key connection between South America and globalization.

Housing

Students participate in homestays arranged by BA Homestay. The homestays are included in the program cost and include breakfast and dinner. By participating in the homestays, students are able to interact with local portenos and enrich the cultural aspect of their experience. In addition, homestays are an excellent way for students to practice Spanish outside of the classroom.

Each student will have his or her own room. Some locations have several available bedrooms and are capable of hosting more than one student. Please note any specific requests on the housing application and every effort will be made to accommodate these preferences.

Students are also allowed to arrange their own housing. The price of the program will be reduced accordingly if a student does not participate in the homestay.
