Denmark: Copenhagen Summer


Program Overview

Copenhagen is a little bit off the beaten track, which is exactly why it is so interesting. A cosmopolitan capital and university center of 1.5 million people, Copenhagen is a safe and hospitable city that combines medieval charm with modern lifestyles and easy access to the rest of continental Europe. The CSI sponsored program is through the Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS), an internationally renowned study abroad organization affiliated with the University of Copenhagen. The DIS program is located at the very center of medieval Copenhagen, in a beautifully restored building from 1789, which includes a library, student lounges, computer labs, student advising and information services, architecture studios, and a few new classrooms. The program is challenging but manageable; courses are taught in English by Danish faculty, on a level comparable to selective universities.

Architecture & Design Program

Students take "Scandinavian Design and Architecture: History, Theory, and Practice (3 credits)" and one of the following (6 credits each):

  • Architectural Design Studio
  • Information Design Studio
  • Interior Architecture Studio
  • Urban Design Studio

Pre-Architecture students take "Scandinavian Design and Architecture: History, Theory, and Practice (3 credits)" and "Architecture Foundations Studio (6 credits)."

Furniture & Textile Design in Scandinavia Program

Students take "Furniture Design in Scandinavia (3 credits)" and "Furniture Design Studio and Workshop (6 credits each)."

The language of instruction is English with the exception of language classes. Students take one three-credit course during a three-week summer session.  Students earn nine-credits for the architecture and design programs.

 

Activities and Opportunities

Student Life

Program participants may choose between a European – type student residence hall (kollegium) with Danish and other international students and share DIS housing –living with other DIS students close to the center of the city.  Students prepare their own meals.  Each three-week program includes a one-week study tour.

Eligibility Requirements

Juniors and Seniors with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale; transcript; one academic reference for Summer; statement of purpose; minimum age of 18.

Costs Included

Instructional costs abroad, textbooks and photocopies, field study events, personal e-mail account and internet access, study tours, compensation for local commuting, administrative fees, orientation, sickness and accident insurance.

Costs Not Included

Airfare ($1000-$1500), housing ($1255 for 3 weeks, $2360 for 6 weeks, $2400 for 7 weeks), personal expenses ($300 for 3 weeks, $600 for 6 weeks, $700 for 7 weeks), food ($150 for 3 weeks, $300 for 6 weeks, $350 for 7 weeks)

Start the CCIS Study Abroad application process by downloading the forms. To download, right click on the application or recommendation form and click "save as", then save the form to your desktop or downloads. Once you have completed your form, SAVE IT FIRST!!!! DO NOT CLICK "SUBMIT" until you have SAVED your form or the recipient will receive a BLANK form. Once you have saved it, click "submit" and THEN email your completed form as an attachment to the contact email address associated with the program in which you are applying. If for some reason you do not see the email address pop up when you click "submit", then email the application to the program sponsor listed here on this page.
