France: Avignon Summer

CCIS Study Abroad in Avignon, France

Program Overview

Avignon is one of the most popular cities in France because of its geographical location. It is situated on the Rhône River, only fifty miles from the Mediterranean. It is also under three hours from Paris by high-speed train and within a day's travel to Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the Alps, and the French Riviera. The beauty of the region as well as the wide variety of social, cultural, and sports activities makes Avignon an exceptional place for study. Students have access to a variety of services, including a multimedia center, language labs, information and business center, and more.

The mission of the Centre d'Avignon is to provide an immersion experience for students of any major whose French is sufficiently advanced (beyond fourth semester) to enable them to take all of their content courses in French and engage fully in the local language and culture. While such students may be French majors or minors, they may simply be interested in expanding their cross-cultural knowledge. Students who have successfully completed the Centre d'Avignon program have majored in such disciplines as political science, anthropology, English, international studies, premed, cinema, education, creative writing, business, psychology, and linguistics.

Students will be in an all French environment and all courses are taught by adjunct French faculty from local universities.

Course Offerings

Art History, French language and literature and visual arts.

Academic Highlights

The Centre d’Avignon program offers a variety of different modules, all designed to help students integrate into the dynamic everyday life of Avignon. In addition to classes at the Centre d’Avignon, students may engage in internships in the working community, participate as volunteers in local organizations, and/or take part in activities organized internally or by local student groups.

Through individually tailored credit-bearing internships, students gain firsthand experience in their fields of interest. Recent internships have dealt with theater, medicine, education, and psychology.

The Centre d'Avignon is housed in the XIIIth century Chapelle Sainte Antoine in the old part of the city. The building has been renovated to accommodate the necessities of contemporary classrooms without losing the sense of the original integrity of the program. The aesthetic play between the ancient and modern provides a very special setting. Internet connections are simple with a fully operational WiFi system linked to a high speed ADSL line. For those students without a laptop and wireless card, desktop computers are provided.

Students receive 6 undergraduate credits for the summer term by enrolling in two courses. A 2.75 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA in French courses is required, along with transcripts and one letters of recommendation, from a French professor. An essay, written in French, is also required for admission into the program which is open to qualified sophomores through senior standing.

Activities and Opportunities

Student Life

IAU expects students to live with French hosts, and almost all do. This firsthand experience with another culture is an integral part of the education abroad experience because it facilitates language acquisition and successful adaptation to France. Living in a carefully selected French home is an invaluable opportunity not found in many study abroad programs. Naturally, all students must accept the constraints and responsibilities such arrangements entail.

Students share daily continental breakfasts and six dinners per week with their hosts; they manage their own lunches and the one dinner per week not taken in the French home.

Those IAU students who wish to live in independent lodgings for dietary or other reasons need to request Permission to do so. They should be aware that short-term furnished rentals are in limited supply. Students are ultimately responsible for locating their own lodgings, arranging the terms of the rental, and handling all related issues.

Housing

Students are housed in French homestays; 6 evening meals and 7 continental breakfasts are taken with French host.
