The Collegium Palatinum is located in Heidelberg, one of Germany's most beautiful and beloved cities, which has long been a center of university education. This world-famous, small romantic town is an ideal place to learn German. Located on the slopes of densely forested hills, Heidelberg is about an hour's train ride from the major urban center of Frankfurt, with access to famous scenic spots such as the Black Forest regions, and is within a few hours' drive from Munich and the Swiss and Austrian Alps. Founded in 1958, the Collegium Palatinum offers German courses all year round, at all levels, for participants who want to learn German intensively and effectively.
The Intensive German Language Program is offered at all levels by highly trained, qualified, university-educated native speakers of German. CP teachers hold university degrees and have teaching experience in German as a Foreign language. They speak one or more foreign languages themselves and have experience working with people from various countries and backgrounds.
The language of instruction is German — right from the very first lesson. Students register for twelve American college credits, with 25 hours of instruction per week, and a total number of 200 contact hours during the eight week session. Transcripts for completion of the courses at the Collegium Palatinum will be processed by St. Ambrose University, located in Iowa.
Participants with knowledge of German will be asked to take an online placement exam upon acceptance into the program. An oral test will take place on the first day of classes at CP and students will then be placed in their German classes. The oral test will be waived for students who are complete beginners in German.
CP has an international environment. Students will be taking classes alongside other American students, as well as with students from all over the world who are also at CP to learn German. Since 8-week sessions run year-round, there will be new students starting/ending their programs each week.
Courses are offered at Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced levels.

The second housing option is in a residence hall located on the campus of Schiller International University, where students cook for themselves and have either a double or single room, with community showers, bathrooms and a kitchen located on each floor. Schiller International University is about a twenty-five minute walk from CP.
The Collegium Palatinum organizes a city tour of Heidelberg for the students during their first week of class, which encourages the students to get to know one another. In addition, the Collegium Palatinum offers local sightseeing trips to the Heidelberg Castle and other museums. Day trips to nearby cities may be offered as well. Students are expected to participate in all of the activities offered during their 8-week session.
The German-American Institute, located across from the Villa Manesse, offers students a library, lectures, films and cultural events. Recreational activities include guided tours in and around Heidelberg, visits to cultural and historic sites, museums, sports and social events. Students are encouraged to take part in these activities.
