Program Overview

Guadalajara is Mexico's second largest city and has a population of approximately 4 million people. Founded in 1542 by Spanish conquistadors, Guadalajara is known as a modern city that has maintained ties to its rich cultural past. In fact, the city prides itself as being Mexico's most traditional city and can count el jarabe tapatío (the Mexican hat dance), sombreros, mariachis, and tequila among its more famous creations.

Spanish language course levels range from 1 (beginning) to 8 (advanced) and all students are required to take a language placement test upon arrival. Students who do not place in to the Advanced Language and Culture Program (level 5 or above) will be placed in to the Intensive Language Program.

Activities and Opportunities
Activities and Opportunities

Student Life

During their time at UAG students are encouraged to immerse themselves through extracurricular activities at the university and optional excursions to various cultural sites in and around Guadalajara.

International students, as well as domestic students, can join the North American Students Association, which promotes intercultural understanding. Student activities and clubs at UAG are also open to international students.

Information on extracurricular activities and clubs available on UAG's campus can be found at the UAG international office.

Every month international students have the option of participating in an excursion to a historically or culturally significant location in and around Guadalajara (the costs associated with these excursions are not included in the program cost).

Housing

UAG will help students arrange housing in a local homestay with a private or shared room. The homestays offered by UAG are like a boarding arrangement where students experience life in a Mexican home, but often live fairly independently of the family.

Students receive three meals per day from the host family. Homes are typically located in nearby residential areas and students generally walk or take public transportation to class.

Private rooms cost $425 per month and shared rooms cost $375 per month. Payments for homestays are not included in the program cost and are paid directly to the host family.
