Program Overview

The Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies (MCTS) is based at Roosevelt Academy, an international honors college of Utrecht University.  MCTS offers two semester-length study abroad programs, plus a one-month summer program each year. The program focuses on a comparative, multidisciplinary approach to transatlantic relationships and developments. Faculty and students from institutions in the Middelburg Center for Transatlantic Studies Consortium gather in a central location to form an interactive, international, learning community.

 


Academic Profile

MCTS was conceived in 1995 by representatives of twelve institutions across the United States, Mexico, and Europe, and offered its first teaching program in the Spring of 1998.  Its membership has grown to include 37 institutions from around the world.  Its goal has been to provide a unique educational program based on the interactive relationship between peoples and cultures on both sides of the Atlantic. Field trips into the surrounding environment are used to supplement and enrich classroom instruction.

 


Activities and Opportunities

Housing

Participants will live in student accommodations within walking distance from the MCTS facility and Roosevelt Academy. Students are typically placed in one of the three main halls of residence in the town. Each room consists of a toilet, shower, kitchenette and one or two bedrooms. There are also community gathering areas on each floor. The cost of housing is included in the MCTS program fee. Food and books are not included in the fee.

*Applicants who apply by the priority deadline will be given preference in housing placements.

Eligibility Requirements

Students from the MCTS member institutions should speak with their campus representative for eligibility criteria. Applicants from non-consortia institutions must have a 2.5 GPA and have completed 24 credit hours, and one semester at their home university prior to participation in this program. Students interested in taking one course through Roosevelt Academy must have a 3.0 GPA.
