Spain: Seville Summer

Program Overview

Located in Seville, this program draws upon the resources of both the University of Seville and the International College of Seville (ICS). Both border a beautiful park near the center of the city, with easy access to the many cultural and historical attractions of Seville. In addition to the historical sites such as churches, palaces and museums, Seville also has modern transportation, many hotels and restaurants, and theatres. Founded in the sixteenth century, the University of Seville, with a student body of over 70,000, is one of the top-ranked universities in Spain. The International College of Seville (ICS), founded in 1982, is a private educational institute with its own classrooms, library, and study areas. It provides a full range of academic advising and student services, as well as numerous activities designed to complement the academic program.

The International College of Seville in Seville

The University of Seville, founded in 1551, is one of the leading institutions of Spain's higher education system. Its Schools of Philology, Geography and History, Philosophy, Biology and Engineering and its many schools and technological institutes serve the educational needs of some 70,000 students.

Located in the downtown area, the University's main building is bordered by the Maria Luisa Park and the Guadalquivir River. This building, the completely remodeled historic Tobacco Factory, houses the Schools of Geography and History, Philology, Law, and the main administrative offices. ICS students enrolled at the University of Seville will appreciate attending classes in the imposing 18th Century building immortalized by Bizet's opera "Carmen" and by 19th Century travellers in search of Romantic Spain. The building, complete with moat and watchtowers, is evidence of the importance given to protecting the King's lucrative tobacco monopoly, which at the time manufactured of all of Europe's cigars.

Academic Highlights

Students attending the Spanish Language program at ICS will enroll in one Spanish language class (beginning, intermediate, or advanced) and Culture and Society of Spain. Students in the Arabic/Spanish Studies Program at the University of Seville can choose to enroll in 1, 2, or 3 courses  for either the first or second session.

The academic program provides an opportunity to experience and understand Spanish/Arabic society and its institutions through direct exposure to Spain's history, art and contemporary society. The program provides excellent preparation for students planning to work in fields requiring a knowledge of Spanish/Arabic language and culture. Students are encouraged to make full use of the human and material resources in Seville and to build an active life in the community. Although extracurricular activities are encouraged and personal travel is a major contributor to the students' European experience, attendance to class is mandatory. A complete field trip package is included in the summer program. The Arabic Studies Program includes a 4-day excursion to Morocco.

A one-day Orientation session is conducted at the ICS at the beginning of the program. This session introduces the student to the country, the culture, and the academic program while also providing practical information about daily living in Seville. All students take a Spanish Proficiency Test before being placed in a Spanish language course.

While ample time is available for travel and relaxation, students are expected to attend classes regularly, study and perform academically to the best of their abilities. Student interviews are held regularly with the Director and with the Director of Academic Affairs of the ICS Center. Students are encouraged to see them any time a problem arises.

Alumni Feedback

“Searching for words that can justifiably describe my study abroad experience and the best word I could come up with is AMAZING! I am so grateful to have been able to experience an opportunity of a lifetime. Thank you Broward College for adding this chapter to the story of my life and working so hard to keep this program available to students. Living  in Spain has opened my mind to new experiencs and has given me a renewe perception of life.  I arrived in Spain without any prior knowledge of the spanish language and thanks to my amazing professor I am able to communicate using the Spanish language. I learned so much in only a month that I was able to travel to Aracena, Spain by myself and navigate using only Spanish. Not only did I learn the language, I also learned awesome historical facts about Spain most importantly Seville. I recommend this program for anyone who is willing to study abroad and learn a totally different culture.”-Magdala Destima, Broward College, Summer 2010

“I think my time in Spain was something that I will never forget! I absolutely loved the atmosphere and that I had the chance to live in a different country and experience something other than America. Sevilla really made strides in my Spanish. I learned new things and got clarification of other things. I loved how I was in an area where I was forced to speak Spanish rather than go back and forth by asking questions in English. Not only did my Spanish improve, but my ability to be independent. At first it was hard to be so far away from my family, but after the first week I became a new person. -Alejandrina Guajardo, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Summer 2010

Studying abroad is Sevilla Spain was the most rewarding opportunity I could ever hope for. The language, the culture and the people I met throughout my stay are now apart of my life and for that I am thankful. I would definitely recommend studying in Sevilla for someone who wants to enjoy the culture and get a taste of what Spain is really like. Sevilla, one of the most beautiful cities that I've ever seen. Spain... A once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.”-Geneva Briggs, New Jersey City University, Spring 2010

“I had the time of my life in Sevilla. My house mother was the sweetest woman and she was a huge part in making my experience awesome. I still miss her every day, just as I miss Sevilla. The city was big, but a cozy big. It had so much culture, which we learned especially through the Friday city and museum visits.  I think study abroad should be mandatory for college students. No one knows how good it is going to be until they go. My life is extraordinarily better because of my semester in Sevilla.”  -Emily Sorokes, St. Bonaventure University, Spring 2010

“I couldn't have asked for a better study abroad experience. I loved Seville so much, it was the perfect city. The ICS program was extremely helpful. They constantly told us about cultural opportunities in the city and welcomed us from the start. The teachers taught me so much. My Spanish has improved immensely because of them. My host mother was perfect. We are still in contact, writing letters back and forth, and I miss her so much. She really made me feel like I was a part of her family. I hope to one day go back and see her. All in all the experience was amazing and was better than I could have ever imagined! Thank you for the great opportunity!!”  -Megan Kane, St. Bonaventure University, Spring 2010
