Academic Profile
FIE’s program in London gives students the opportunity to experience firsthand this complex society through interdisciplinary coursework as well as tailored academic internships, service learning and research opportunities. Students take an FIE Key Course, two to three elective courses, and choose one of three pathways. Elective courses, which vary each semester, are generally offered in History, Business, Music, Literature, and Sociology. Field trips, guest lectures by London-based specialists, site visits and other program activities are integrated into all FIE courses. Through FIE, you can arrange your semester to fit your academic goals. In addition to taking an FIE key course, you will choose one of three pathways:
Internship Pathway-
The International Internship Course offers an immersion experience into British culture and London life by providing a workplace experience supported by FIE seminars. Internships are arranged based on your academic interests and career goals and are typically three days per week over an 8 week period.
Service Learning Pathway-
The International Service Learning Course gives you a service learning experience within a British context. Conduct service work 3 days per week with a London non-profit, charity or social enterprise organization based on your education background and interests. Enrollment in the Social Welfare course is required for students in the Service Learning pathway.
Research Pathway-
The International Research Course is designed for students in the social sciences, business studies and the humanities. Develop research skills and concepts by designing, executing, writing and presenting your own research project. Research projects are based on a case study, which allows students to engage in ethnographic observation, in-depth interviewing and document review. Topics will center on British cultural, historical, political or contemporary contexts and may have a comparative dimension.
